How to Access

  1. Click on 'Access BMJ Best Practice' button below.
  2. Select the 'Access through your institution' option.
  3. Search for your organisation and sign in with your OpenAthens username and password. You will then be taken back to BMJ Best Practice.
  4. Create a personal account on your first visit. This will enable you to use the app and track CPD/CME activity.

How to Download the app

  1. Visit the BMJ Best Practice website and log in through your institution via OpenAthens.
  2. Click ‘Create account‘ for a personal account or 'Log in' if you already have one.
  3. Visit your Apple or Google Play store, search for ‘BMJ Best Practice’ and download app.
  4. Use your BMJ Best Practice ‘personal account’ details to sign in and download the content.

Comorbidities Manager now available within BMJ Best Practice

Rising to the comorbidities challenge  

Both senior and junior healthcare professionals in the acute setting often struggle with the diagnosis and treatment of patients who present with existing conditions.

In the UK, one in three adults suffer from multiple chronic conditions and most patients in the acute setting have more than one medical condition. This is a significant and costly global problem.

Managing the treatment of patients with comorbidities is hard – clinical guidelines only focus on single conditions – but failure to manage comorbidities leads to worse clinical outcomes and longer lengths of stay.

In response to this, BMJ has integrated the Comorbidities Manager into BMJ Best Practice. This is the only point of care tool that supports the management of the whole patient by including guidance on the treatment of a patient’s acute condition alongside their pre-existing comorbidities. 

Healthcare professionals are prompted to consider the patient’s comorbidities when accessing treatment information. The tool then produces an initial management plan that is tailored to the unique needs of the patient. Content is written using evidence-based guidelines, as well as by Clinical Experts.

Treating the acute presentation alongside existing conditions in this way enables hospitals to increase quality of care and efficiencies through the effective management of the patient. This in turn means better clinical outcomes, shorter hospital stays and fewer readmissions.

How to Access

  1. If you don’t have an OpenAthens account, register for an 'OpenAthens' username and password with your library contact.
  2. Click on the 'Access BMJ Learning' button below. Select 'Sign in' at the top right hand side of the screen. This will open a drop down box, from here select 'OpenAthens users sign in here'.
  3. Enter your OpenAthens username and password which will take you to a BMJ Learning login page.
  4. Register on BMJ Learning to create your new account if this is the first time you are accessing BMJ Learning. Alternatively if you have already registered and accessed before, simply sign in.
