Voting begins for greatest neuroscience breakthrough of past 100 years

The Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry (JNNP) today reveals the 10 milestones that have made its short-list to find the most important or transformative development in neurology, neurosurgery or psychiatry since the journal began.

The project is a celebration to mark 100 continuous years of publishing the innovations, medical breakthroughs and trailblazing studies that have made JNNP the go-to journal across the clinical neurosciences.

The list includes achievements that have transformed the lives of millions of people around the world, such as the development of brain imaging, new therapies for Parkinson’s disease and stroke, and the introduction of microsurgical techniques in neurosurgery.

Matthew Kiernan, Professor of Neurology at the University of Sydney and JNNP Editor in Chief says: “Any of these milestones would make a deserving winner – they have all made an enormous contribution to society and made a difference to millions of lives. It will be fascinating to see which one will come out on top.

“It’s also an opportunity to consider how these milestones will develop medicine in the future,” he adds. “Will neurogenetics deliver on its promise of real clinical benefit? Can the evolution of new therapies help us better manage patients with conditions such as multiple sclerosis and dementia?”

The journal is now asking readers to choose the milestone they think should win. Although JNNP is read mainly by healthcare professionals in the field, anyone can visit the website to view the shortlist and cast their vote here.

Voting will close on 31st May 2020 and the winning milestone will be announced at a celebratory event to mark the journal’s centenary later in the year.
